Swim Cap

A swim cap is a must if you are a swimmer or are intending to take up swimming. It is probably the third most important piece of gear for swimming after a swimsuit and some goggles.

Why should you use a swim cap?

There is a variety of reasons why you should be using a swimming cap, including:

  • protecting your hair from the water and chlorine,
  • keeping your hair out of your face,
  • making you more visible in the water (in the right colors!),
  • as well as streamlining your swimming efforts.

Types of swim caps

Swim caps come in a number of different materials, such as:

  • Latex – these are generally the cheapest option with the least durability. However they can be a good starting option if you don’t have long hair. Also these can’t be used for people with a latex allergy so one of the other types is more appropriate.
  • Silicone – a little pricier than the latex option, however these silicone caps are thicker and more durable. Additionally silicone caps are much nicer to put on for those with long hair. Silicone caps generally only command a ~$2 premium to latex caps so they provide great value with the benefits over latex.
  • Lycra – these caps aren’t water proof but they still keep hair out of your face and streamline your swimming. Some people actually combine a Lycra (or polyester) cap with a latex cap on top. This gives comfort for your hair underneath while still being waterproof.
  • Polyester – Very similar to the Lycra option but just a different material. Also great for children who don’t like the feeling of latex or silicone swim caps.

A swim cap is greatly important for recreational and professional swimmers. Plus there are many types to suit your personal preference and comfort for swimming.
